5. How do I obtain a Marriage License in Memphis, Tennessee?
Obtaining a marriage license in Memphis and Shelby County is an easy task. Below you will find the information needed before you go to the county clerk's office.
Here's How:
Gather all required documentation:
Ages 21 and Older-Valid photo ID and proof of Social Security number (a passport may be used in lieu of a Social Security number for persons who are not U.S. citizens)
Ages 18-20: Certified birth certificate and proof of Social Security number (a passport may be used in lieu of a Social Security number for persons who are not U.S. citizens)
Ages 16-17: Certified birth certificate, proof of Social Security number, and affidavit signed by both parents (who must also be present)
Under 16: Certified birth certificate, proof of Social Security number, and waiver issued by Juvenile Court.
Obtain proof of counseling, if applicable. Receiving four hours of approved premarital counseling will significantly reduce the fee for a marriage license.
Visit one of the following Shelby County Clerk's offices in person to obtain your license on the spot. Both the bride and the groom must be present.

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:15 p.m. - After the ceremony, the signed vital record application must be sent back to the Shelby County Clerk's office. This is usually handled by the person who officiates the wedding.
- No blood test is required before the issuance of a marriage license in the state of Tennessee.
- Once the marriage license is issued, it is only valid for 30 days.
- If you are planning to be married by the Justice of the Peace, you must make prior arrangements as each office does not have a Justice of the Peace present at all times. Also note that there is an additional fee for the service.
- Be sure to verify fees, hours of operation, and other information before you go to the county clerk's office, as this information is subject to change.
- If you were married previously, be sure to bring along a copy of your divorce decree.
